Favorites, least favorite, and one random question

Here's an interview from Bri!  (And Jake, your interview questions will be coming, when I think of some good ones...when I take the time to think of some good ones...when I stop procrastinating on pretty much all of life...)

1) What is your number one favorite thing to do with a free afternoon?
Play ultimate frisbee, have a game of softball, and then read a book while sunning in a tube on the lake drinking lemonade out of my Nalgene, all in the company of my wonderful friends!  (Or one or any of these things.)

2) What is your least favorite emotion to feel, and why?
Disappointment.  When I'm disappointed, I often don't know what it means, i.e. whether because I disillusioned myself about something and need to be more realistic or if it's proper for me to challenge the person I'm disappointed in (or challenge myself, if I'm disappointed in me) by talking to them about whatever was the source of the disappointment or if it's something that I didn't need to be more realistic about but also can't change.  It's also quite judgmental in nature.  In addition, I feel this emotion the most often out of the typical negative ones (anger, fear, frustration, worry, confusion), minus that confusion, of course!  :)

3) If granted one wish you could use on anything or anyone, what would you wish for?
That we would all truly listen to God, who is prompting us to love unquestioningly.  That would take care of absolutely everything that is really worth wishing for.

4) What is your favorite time of day, and why?
Night!  The best talks happen at night, everything is much more amusing, there's stargazing, and there's never a true limit on the fun, because I can always cut out more sleep.

5) Who is your favorite actor...and in what specific film/tv show/etc.?
I don't want to answer this, because I honestly can't decide and know that this question was included because I'm so very bad with actors' names!  So, I'm going to give you a favorite actress, albeit a young one.  Hayden Panettiere does an amazing job in Remember the Titans as Sheryl, the daughter.

Thanks, Bri, for the interview and for getting "These are a few of my Favorite Things" in my head!  And I mean that thanks wholeheartedly, for it is a fabulous song!

Semester of Schooling

If you could go to any school in any country for one semester,
which would it be?

I rethought this question, the second on my list from John.  And I realized that my answer assumed that I was spending the time not at this school of my choosing at UST.  The question does not indicate that in any way.  So, I must change my answer!  The University of St. Thomas is the place for me!!  How could I not say that, after all the awesomeness I've experienced there and all the wonderful relationships I've formed?

Doubling my completed interviews

Here's #2!

1. What is your proudest moment?
For this, I have to go with the first time my sister told me that she looked up to me and considered me one of her best friends.  For all of my life, I had been looking up to her, idolizing her, copying her, and learning from her, so when she said that she learned from me, too, it was really special.

2. If you could go to any school in any country for one semester, which would it be?
Universitaet Freiburg, of course, Freiburg im Breisgau, Deutschland!  However, I would also really like to spend a semester in a developing country, though I would second-guess going somewhere quite dangerous or restrictive for women.  I would like to return to Ecuador someday, and studying there would be awesome!

3. What is your favorite food?
I pretty much love food, and I hate this question, because I'm never satisfied giving one answer.  So I created some categories and decided to pick a favorite from each of them.  Then I couldn't even narrow it down to that!  Here's what I've got, though:

Pasta: Lasagna, spaetzle (homemade German noodles!)
Cereal: Cinnamon Toast Crunch
Bread: Brezeln (soft pretzels, Deutsch-style)
Potato: Cheesy garlic mashed
Meat: Baked shrimp
Dairy: Skim milk
Veggie: Bell peppers, tomatoes
Fruit: Strawberries, grapes, raspberries, blackberries, cherries (I really can't decide!)
Sweet: Chocolate (pretty much all types, minus Hershey's, which is only good on s'mores), Swedish fish, cheesecake

4. What is one thing that someone has done for you that you shall never forget?
My sister made me a rosary and then used it to pray the rosary for me every day for a month before a retreat I went to.  I got the rosary with a letter from her while at the retreat, and I know that the incredible experience I had there is at least partially thanks to the gift of prayer she gave me!

5. Do you have any major role models in life that have inspired you to get where you are now?
There are many well-known people who have made a difference in my life, of course, among them JPII, Mother Teresa, human rights activists, saints, and Jesus Himself, but those people I know personally who model the same characteristics found in these standard admissions essay role models are often so much more touching.  Without them, I would never appreciate learning about the famous folk, because had I never seen their love, courage, compassion, hope, faith, and wisdom in action, I would not recognize the beauty of these virtues when reading about them.

With that, I would like to mention here Laurie Rausch, my former youth minister, who showed me the joy of faith.  Life with Laurie was never monotonous, for she is bouncy, cheerful, and vibrant.  She isn't concerned about money, and she puts her whole heart into her work.  Her kindness is always visible, and so, around her, everyone knows they are cared for.

But next, I do have a typical answer: my parents.  I have to mention them, because they are incredible role models for me.  They formed our loving family and have taught me and my siblings well.  They provide for us lovingly while teaching us appreciation and respect.  They support each other as they go through life together.  Frankly, I wish I knew how they do it, because even though I joke about it, I wouldn't at all mind turning out like my mom and having a husband like my dad!

Thanks for the interview, John!

Interview with a Lend!

Colleen, by now you may have wondered if I was lying when I said I'd do this interview, but I have just been a good procrastinator.  You know, I can't get out of practice during the summer.  Thanks for the questions - I really enjoyed answering them!

1. What's once decision you've made that everyone thought was crazy?
I applied to eleven colleges.Everyone thought that was crazy. And by everyone I mean yes, even me.

2. If you could go pro in any sport, what would it be?
I considered soccer, because I definitely have World Cup fever at the moment! And then I decided on bocce ball, because it's a blast, and I was the bocce queen at the Fourth of July get-togethers I attended.Undefeated.And it’s important to be good in the sport one goes pro in.But I have to go with a true love: Ultimate Frisbee.

Of course, maybe you’ve heard of it by it’s other names.I shall recount a conversation I had with my parents recently: “They ski a lot where you’re going in Germany, right? There’ll be no extreme frisbee there,” said Dad, to which I responded, “It’s ultimate frisbee, Dad.”“Whatever.”Then Mom chipped in with, “I like to call it emergency room frisbee.”And I laugh(ed).

3. How many licks does it take to get to the center of a Tootsie Pop?
Well, according to Tootsie.com, three known studies have been conducted.Engineering students from Purdue had a licking machine that averages 364 licks, while their human volunteers averaged 252.A chemical engineering doctorate student from U of Michigan had a machine with a 411 average. And students at Swathmore had human lickers average 144 in their science experiment.Oh, and elementary school students in Wisconsin averaged 9 minutes, if you want to race them.

Obviously, engineers and scientists, even novices who haven't been corrupted, can’t be right. And no one from Wisconsin could’ve figured it out. Therefore, it must take a random number, which I choose to be none other than 73. And it takes 7 minutes.

4. What is your greatest fear about going to Germany?
I worry that I might come back and feel like I wasted a year of my time in college. It would be terrible to find out that as much as studying abroad is hyped up and as many good experiences as a lot of people have, that it isn't for me.Sometimes I think that because I’m loving my time at UST, I shouldn’t be messing with a good thing.

5. What is your greatest excitement about going to Germany?
I
have doubts like I just explained, and then someone asks me this, and I can’t decide where to begin!I’m so glad to have the amount of time there that I will have (though I’m scared and sad about leaving for that long!), because I will be able to experience the culture and language so much more. I’m excited about getting comfortable there, feeling at home, improving my German, making friends, traveling, challenging myself, etc. etc. etc.!!

If I had to pick one thing, I think I’d pick learning about myself.I feel like it’s a selfish year for me.Yes, I’m excited to learn about other cultures, Germany’s in particular, but I’m especially excited about what that learning is going to expose about me.I’m going to discover a lot of my assumptions, cultural expectations, background, way of thinking, and way of life. That will be difficult at times, I’m sure, but awesome, too.And I’ll get to change some of that and cement other parts.I’ll be able to see what I do and don’t like about the German culture and about the American culture.I’ll be able to see how I fit in each.I’ll be pressed to acknowledge parts of me I never notice when I’m here.I think I’ll become a lot more self-aware, and that may be hard or disappointing at times, but it will also be exciting and a tremendous asset to me!

If you wish…
1. Leave me a comment saying, "Interview me."
2. I will respond by asking you five questions.
3. You will update your Xanga with the answers to the questions.
4. You will include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, you will ask them five questions.

(And more interviews will be coming!)
